Jennifer, Gord, and their six-month old son Jasper were in East Sooke a couple weeks ago visiting family. They had me along for a documentary family photography session at the beach at East Sooke Park and then some time at their family’s home nearby. I don’t typically do family portraits, so I was thrilled that they wanted to do a session documenting an actual day in their lives. Jasper is a very lively and expressive baby – it was actually tough to get him to stop looking at the camera (babies just don’t understand photojournalism). The weather was perfect and I had a lot of fun. I’d love to do some more sessions like these.

A Day at the Fair

Back in September, I joined Wendy and Garry for a day at the Saanich Fair. They’ve been married for nineteen years and wanted to document something they love to do together. They spend a lot of weekends checking out different events in town and experiencing new things. The fair is an old favourite of theirs, especially the horses.

When asked to say something interesting about their relationship, Garry wrote, “We don’t have all the same likes and dislikes, we don’t watch the same media, or have the same politics (we don’t vote the same but we believe in the same things. We just think there are different ways to get there), in part because of the difference of age but we are very different.” Wendy explained “But on the important things, the age difference has really never mattered. We are just very different people in many, many ways. But at the end of the day, we are on the same side; looking out for each other.”

It was a lot of fun spending some time with these two, seeing how they enjoy each others’ company.

Julia and Andrew are Married

Julia and Andrew are originally from California, now living in Victoria, and had a small wedding ceremony with their closest friends and family at the Amethyst Inn. They had their dog, Noodle, as their ring bearer, except he got a little too excited and had to wander around smelling everything when he was put on the ground during the ceremony. Solution: drape the ring bags over his back and attract his attention. He turned out to be the perfect addition to a ceremony that included family heckling the bride when asked if anyone objected to their marriage and lots of laughter combined with tears.

We started the day at their nearby adorable character house and later snuck in some portraits at Government House down the street, even though it rained and got super cold all of a sudden. We ended off the day with some bride and groom portraits at their house, where photographer Julia had the most beautiful couch in front of a light-filled window. Perfect. Julia and Andrew are such a sweet, and silly, couple. I especially love the portraits of them cuddling on the couch, and of course, Noodle had to get in on the action.

In the Garden

Last spring, I had the idea to do some photographs of marriage, rather than just weddings. I wanted to spend some time photographing married or committed couples going about their normal lives, particularly doing things that make them feel most at home or happy in their relationship. I thought it would be great to show that there doesn’t have to be a big white dress involved in order to celebrate your love through photographs.

It took me a while to find the perfect couples for this project and even longer to make our schedules work, especially once wedding season started. I found Karen and Lisa thanks to a tip from someone on my Facebook page and I’m so happy I did, because I think this session is absolutely beautiful, with the summery floral colours and couple’s bright style, sweet dogs, and the obvious love and friendship that come from this relationship of ten years.

Engagement Stop-Motion Video

You may remember Joan and Marcel’s adorable, prop-filled engagement session at Beacon Hill Park from October. Joan also wanted to have a stop-motion engagement video made from the session, and after a bit of brushing up in Adobe Premiere, I’m finally ready to share the results. Joan picked the song (The Goldenhand by The Parlour Suite), which was perfect for this video. How cute are they?

Sara and John are Engaged

Sara and John visited Victoria in January, as a little break from the winter weather in Alberta. John even wore his flip flops for the shoot (and likely for the entire visit). They brought some props to help set the stage for engagement announcements. We wandered around downtown from the parliament buildings to the library courtyard to The Atrium and back to the parliament buildings at night. It was a fun session to get me back into shooting for the year.

We stopped into Poppies in The Atrium and the couple asked if they could borrow a flower for John to give to Sara. The woman there gave them a rose and told them to keep it, which was super nice of her.

Interactive Guest Book – Robyn and Steve

Robyn and Steve loved my sample interactive guestbook, so they ordered one for their wedding. Robyn came over one night and we worked on the layout together. She chose colours and fonts that went with the ocean-theme of their beachy engagement session. I had a look at the book after the wedding and there were some truly sweet comments from their family and friends. Here’s a look at the layouts that went into the book.

Robyn and Stephen are Married

This wedding happened in September, but I wanted to save it for the long, rainy winter to remind me of the beautiful summer sun. I adored the location (Merridale Estate Cidery), the couple, their adorable wedding party with cute semi-matching outfits, the beautiful weather, the warmth and joy of everything, and the way the photos turned out, including the awesome shots of the guys getting ready by my second shooter Gwen Ewart (whose photos of that, the posed shot of the guys, and many of the detail photos are included in this post). Looking at these photos brings me back to that gorgeous September light and the sweetness of the wedding day.

I loved how close Robyn and Steve were with their friends. Robyn and her maid of honour, Kristina, were adorable with tons of hugs, sweet glances, and even singing into wooden spoons together (I hear that’s a side effect of Meatloaf). The bridesmaids and groomsmen looked nearly as emotional as Steve as they watched Robyn walk down the aisle. Steve’s best man Ben gave one of my favourite best man toasts ever. Even though I can barely remember a word of it, as Steve says I remember how it made me feel – like I wanted to get to know this couple better because they’re really something special. Luckily, I’ve had a chance to spend some time with them since and I’m pretty sure that feeling was right.

Steve is a pro triathlete, so of course, the guys decided to run into the freezing cold ocean at Willows Beach before the wedding, which Gwen captured perfectly. Other memorable moments of the day: Steve finally cracking and letting the tears fall during the toasts, a super emotional first dance amongst the bubbles, Robyn dancing her butt off all night long, Robyn and Steve surrounded by a circle of friends on the dance floor, and Steve dancing looking as happy as a kid on Christmas morning.

I was worried I might write too much about this wedding, but I actually feel like just posting some photos now (possibly way too many). The emotions in these shots speak for themselves.

A Few More Weeks of Waiting

Back in September, I shot a documentary session with my friends Lauren and Andreas. These two were adapting to and preparing for some major changes at the time, having recently moved into their newly purchased first house and expecting their first child. Lauren ended up giving birth to a sweet baby girl, Leonie, a few weeks later. On this day, they got one step closer to ready by installing a car seat. They also made dinner and then we headed over to the Selkirk Trestle for a few posed portraits.

There are a couple more of these documentary couples sessions coming up soon and I can’t wait to share them with you.

Sheila and Gord are Married

Sheila and Gord were married in late November on the Esquimalt Navy Base. I love the classy touch that the Navy dress uniforms add to the atmosphere of the day. The overall style of this wedding was a wintery sort of elegance, if that phrase makes any sense at all. Anyway, everyone looked amazing in their best clothes, the ceremony was very sweet (and the couple very emotional during it), and it seemed like everyone had a great time.

The girls got ready at The Inn at Laurel Point, where I love to photograph because the rooms have so much gorgeous natural light.

This is one of the few very successful bubble exits I’ve seen. The bubbles continued for quite a while after they exited the chapel. Nice effort, guests!

We headed to Saxe Point for a few photos, though the grass was super soggy and the sky was very bright. I love the west coast winter feel to these shots. Afterwards, we headed to the Admiral’s house on the base, which was a pretty interesting experience. The garden there was gorgeous, despite the cooling weather. Sheila and Gord were their usual sweet and adorable selves.

The reception was at the Ward Room, which was decorated a bit for Christmas. I loved the cozy feel of the room with the bar and big fireplace.

After cocktail hour, the evening continued with funny stories about Sheila and Gord along with some toasts (and roasts). During one such “toast”, Gord’s sister laughed so hard and loud that she cried.

The DJ asked the flower girl what song she’d like to hear and she said “Boom Boom Pow”. When he played it, she displayed some mad dancing skills. Seriously amazing.
